PROJECT: Flatted development at South Oswald Road

LOCATION: South Oswald Road, Edinburgh

CLIENT: Westpoint Homes

STATUS: Completed on site 2006

DESCRIPTION: Development of 15 new flats and houses in the Grange area of Edinburgh.

The development occupies a former Salvation Army Hostel site, within the conservation area of the Grange, surrounded by large detached stone villas and mature trees.

The project for Westpoint Homes called for a high quality design, and planning requirements led to a solution which was contemporary in style, but which closely followed the profile of the existing building.

The design forms two sides of a landscaped courtyard, and is created from 3 blocks varying in height between 2 1/2 and 4 storeys. The entrance to the main building is located at the internal angle of the L, opening on to a 3 storey glass-roofed atrium which links the floors and provides access to 13 no.  2 and 3 bedroom flats. The remaining two properties are 3 storey townhouses with their own entrances.

Modern materials such as render and aluminium are used to contrast with more traditional natural sandstone and lead, used in contemporary ways. Timber and steel balconies also feature in the development.
