PROJECT: Muirfield Nursing Home

LOCATION: Main Street/Hall Crescent, Gullane, East Lothian.

CLIENT: Randolph Hill Group

STATUS: Completed on site 2017

DESCRIPTION: A redevelopment of an existing nursing home to provide a new 60 bed care home and 8 flats.

Randolph Hill have operated a 40 bed Muirfield Nursing Home within the conservation area of Gullane village since the early 2000s. Prior to redevelopment, the home was set entirely within an existing Victorian/Edwardian building which had become less efficient to run due to the restricted size of the rooms and the constraints of its internal layout.

Gilberts were commissioned to achieve planning consent for a new 60 bed facility utilising land to the south and east of the existing building.  The proposals involved a degree of façade retention of the existing eastern gable, as the new build linked on to the old home.  The new building was designed over 3 and 4 storeys, to form a partially enclosed courtyard at the rear of the site.  Stylistically the new home is traditional in terms of its massing and materials, allowing it to sit comfortably within the conservation area.

Planning consent was granted in 2012, and the development of the new home was completed in the summer of 2017, following a phased construction programme to allow the existing residents to move into their new home with minimal disruption.
