PROJECT: Great King Street

LOCATION: Great King Street, Edinburgh

CLIENT: Private client

STATUS: Completed on site 2014

DESCRIPTION: Refurbishment of Category A listed townhouse within the New Town Conservation Area, Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site.

The clients had been looking for a Georgian town house for some time before purchasing this Great King Street property. They were initially attracted to it as it was a complete four storey house with little evidence of previous sub-division and had retained many of its original interior features.

Their brief was to retain as many of these features as possible in the principal reception rooms, while incorporating some more modern facilities in the basement, where the existing rooms were more utilitarian in character.  They had also expressed a desire to enhance the link between indoors and outdoors with direct access to the walled rear garden.

In addition to restoring the main internal rooms, the house was fitted with a new kitchen, cinema room, spa with hot tub, and a garden room with bi-fold doors to the garden terrace. A lift was also installed to provide level access throughout the property.

Gilberts were also commissioned by the same clients to design a mews house within the curtilage of the main house garden on Northumberland Street North East Lane. Planning and Listed Building Consent was gained for a four bed, three storey property in early 2014.
